Neuropathy Defined

According to the Mayo Clinic, “every nerve that provides sensory, motor or autonomic information to the central nervous system from the body has a specific function, so the symptoms that will be experienced depend on the types of nerves that are affected.” Typically, nerves are damaged by trauma or injury, exposure to toxic chemicals, medications, or heavy metals, or diseases like diabetes that restrict blood flow and destroy the nerves. There can be a gradual onset of numbness, tingling or pain, sensitivity to touch, or even muscle weakness or paralysis. 

   Peripheral Neuropathy is a medical condition in which the nerves in the body are damaged by other  conditions such as diabetes, chemotherapy, sciatica, trauma, and complex regional pain syndrome among many other causes. According to the national Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “An estimated 20 million people in the United States have some form of peripheral neuropathy” (ninds.nih.gov, 2018). Symptoms from neuropathy include burning and stabbing pain, numbness, tingling, and sensitivity to touch.
